Printing Plant Art Book Fair in Amsterdam
From November 23 to 25 I’m participating in the first edition of the Printing Plant Art Book Fair. I’m sharing a table, or rather a vertical panel, with Joachim Schmid and will be bringing my most recent publications including Indirections, De wolk, The Plan, and one of the last two copies of the special edition of Song of Myself.
The fair is initiated and organised by Looiersgracht 60. The unique housing and history of Looiersgracht 60 is utilised to correspond to the etiquette of the fair. Prior to its current use as a not-for-profit exhibition centre for art, design and architecture, Looiersgracht 60 was home to a cardboard and paper factory that also printed pamphlets, posters, limited-editions and cards for artists and museums. The building thus has a long-standing connection with the artist community in Amsterdam, making it the ideal location for ‘Printing Plant’. By reiterating its past and previous function, Looiersgracht 60 conceives of a new platform for printed matter. Over 70 selected independent publishers, antiquarian dealers, artists, galleries and printmakers will be showcasing their works.
Printing Plant is part of the official programme of Amsterdam Art Weekend 2018. The opening will take place on Friday November 23. Over the course of the weekend, the fair will be complemented by a programme of talks, book launches, performances, signings, and workshops for children.

Week of the Artist Book + symposium
From October 13 to 20 the ‘Week of the Artist Book’ will take place in Groningen. It is organized by Stichting ARTisBOOK. During the week 25 galeries, museums, bookshops and cultural institutes will celebrate the artist book and its development from the 1960s to now through exhibitions, workshops, talks, signings etc. More information (in Dutch) about the week is available here.
Exhibition at Noorderlicht
As part of this week my work The Plan will be exhibited at Noorderlicht. Noorderlicht will also show work by Wil van Iersel, Jan van der Til, Anouk Kruithof, Carina Hesper en Jan Dirk van der Burg. This show will continue beyond the week, until November 4.
Location: Noorderlicht – Huis van de Fotografie, Akerkhof 12, Groningen.
Hours: Wednesdays-Sundays from 12.00 to 18.00.
Admission is €4,- (€2,- for students). Note: at the ARTisBOOKshop (see below) you can get free entree tickets.
Symposium
On October 19 I’ll be a speaker at the ARTisBOOK symposium. This will take place at the university library of Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Detailed information is available in this pdf. The symposium is free to attend. Register here before October 12.
Exhibition at Academie Minerva
At Academie Minerva An Empty Field and Enduring Freedom will be shown in the exhibition ‘Provo! Fluxus! Verzet!’ curated by Barthold Boksem.

A Young Gentleman in the attic
The Story of a Young Gentleman is back in stock for a limited time due to the discovery of a forgotten box (poor young gentleman!) in the attic.

Poetry reading in Rotterdam
On May 17 the four nominees of the C. Buddingh’ poetry award will present their books at bookstore Van Gennep in Rotterdam. It’s a free event and it starts at 5 pm (note it will be in Dutch).
Op 17 mei presenteren de genomineerden voor de C. Buddingh’-prijs hun bundels in de tuin bij boekhandel Van Gennep in Rotterdam. Dit is vrij toegankelijk, en het begint om 17.00 uur. Met Dean Bowden, Radna Fabias, Elisabeth Tonnard en Arno Van Vlierberghe. En met interviews door Simone van Hulst. De uitreiking volgt op 31 mei tijdens Poetry International in Rotterdam.
New work: Indirections
Indirections is a series of pamphlets that focus on the manoeuvring involved when things are presented to the public eye. Duplicitous language, selective filters, whether the deceptions of Soviet propaganda or the deceits that I find in my local newspaper (and they are surprisingly similar), bend and spin things that perhaps were never even straight to begin with. Each item in the series is a folded sheet containing a single found image and its caption. The caption is on the front, the image is hidden inside. By uncoupling them, the two elements are each given their own stage – as a result a new space opens up between them. In that space a small tragicomedy is played out.
There are now eight pamphlets published. This is not a closed set; more may be added to this series eventually and each pamphlet can function by itself. Each is an A3 sized sheet, folded to 14 x 29,7 cm and digitally printed on 300 gsm paper in an edition of 90 copies (not numbered).
Each pamphlet is priced at €7,50. If you like to order one or more pamphlets, you can use the webshop, or order by email. A flat fee for shipping applies. No matter how many pamphlets you order, shipping to The Netherlands is €5,- shipping to anywhere else is €10,-.
The pamphlets will be available at my table at Miss Read from May 4-6.

Miss Read in Berlin
I’ll be participating in Miss Read from May 4th to 6th. Works I’ll show include An Empty Field, The Plan and my new series Indirections.
The fair will take place at Haus der Kulturen der Welt and will bring together a wide selection of 260+ publishers, art periodicals and artists/authors.
In conjunction, the sixth Conceptual Poetics Day will explore the imaginary border between visual art and literature.

De jury van de C. Buddingh’-Prijs 2018 nomineert de debuten van Dean Bowen, Radna Fabias, Elisabeth Tonnard en Arno Van Vlierberghe voor de 30ste C. Buddingh’-Prijs, de jaarlijkse prijs voor het beste Nederlandstalige poëziedebuut. De jury, bestaande uit Charlotte Van den Broeck, Jeroen Dera en Antoine de Kom, kreeg eenentwintig debuutbundels onder ogen. De winnaar van de C. Buddingh’-Prijs 2018 wordt op donderdag 31 mei a.s. bekendgemaakt in ‘De Staat van de Poëzie’, een speciaal programma op het 49e Poetry International Festival. Al eerder presenteren de genomineerden hun bundels in de tuin van Boekhandel Van Gennep in Rotterdam.
‘De inzendingen van dit jaar getuigen van grote diversiteit en verregaande vernieuwing, een zoektocht naar engagement in talige vorm waarin de kracht van poëzie als ontwrichtend medium duidelijk wordt,’ aldus de jury. ‘Taalplezier moet het af en toe ontgelden in deze soms cerebrale identiteitspoëzie, die een duidelijke zoektocht naar het ‘ik’ vormt. Opvallend zijn de kleine uitgeverijen: zij hebben het voortouw genomen in het bewandelen van deze weg van vernieuwing en durven opvallende stemmen uit te geven.’

“een lichaam dat / het tussenin balanceert niet in staat aan de politiek van het bestaan / te ontsnappen” – ‘In Bokman wordt het tussenin in een eruptie van registers aanschouwelijk gemaakt. Het levert een lang nazinderende bundel op, die een zeer originele, weerbarstig nieuwe stem vertolkt,’ zo oordeelt de jury. Dean Bowen is dichter, performer en psychonaut. Hij publiceerde op de online platforms SampleKanon en Hard//Hoofd en in tijdschriften als nY en Kunsttijdschrift Vlaanderen. Zijn krachtige voordracht maakt hem een graag geziene gast bij de diverse woordkunstpodia in Nederland en België.
Habitus van Radna Fabias

“ik krijg / vijf trucs om gokkasten te laten betalen / een simpele manier om geld te maken / acht manieren om de man thuis te houden waaronder / vier brouwsels voor een strakkere kut” – ‘De taal houdt onder schot in Habitus. Met overdonderde kracht sleurt Fabias de lezer mee in een broeierig tussengebied. Een subversieve stem die afkomst, bestemming, lichaam en perspectief te lijf gaat en daarbij zichzelf en de ander niet spaart,’ schrijft de jury. Radna Fabias is geboren en getogen op de Nederlandse Antillen. Zij studeerde aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht en won in 2016 de poëzieprijs van de stad Oostende.

‘Ik vaar. Ik vaar. / Alsmaar vaar ik voort.’ – ‘Zo is ook de leeservaring bij deze gedichten. Deze kunstzinnige en conceptuele bundel is een reis langs landschappen en straten, langs kleuren en coniferen, maar vooral langs een taal die je keer op keer wilt herbeleven,’ aldus de jury. Elisabeth Tonnard is werkzaam op het terrein van poëzie, fotografie en kunstenaarsboeken. In 2003 gaf ze in eigen beheer Let us go then, you and I uit, gedichten getipp-exed uit een gedicht van T.S. Eliot. Sindsdien maakte ze zo’n veertig kunstenaarsboeken, variërend van een boek dat geheel onzichtbaar is tot een boek dat een draagbaar zwembad vormt.

“Wie komt in opstand en tegen wat? Een Arno kwam opnieuw met lege handen op de thuisplek toe.” – ‘Niets is minder waar. Hier hamert een ontegensprekelijke poëzie en dwingt ons tot het besef van wat in groots verzet al doordrenkend dichten is,’ aldus de jury. Arno Van Vlierberghe is dichter. Hij leeft, woont en werkt in Gent. Zijn werk verscheen onder andere in Het Liegend Konijn, nY, Deus Ex Machina, DW B en op Hard//hoofd, Cabaret Wittgenstein en Samplekanon.
C. Buddingh’-Prijs
Sinds 1988 wordt op initiatief van Poetry International ieder jaar de C. Buddingh’-Prijs uitgereikt aan de schrijver of schrijfster van het beste poëziedebuut. Met de prijs beoogt Poetry International meer aandacht te genereren voor talentvolle nieuwe stemmen in de Nederlandstalige poëzie. Voor menig dichter van naam was de C. Buddingh’-Prijs de eerste belangrijke trofee die in de wacht werd gesleept. Joke van Leeuwen, Tonnus Oosterhoff, Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer en Anna Enquist, of recenter Lieke Marsman, Ellen Deckwitz, Maarten van der Graaff en Marieke Lucas Rijneveld behoren tot de laureaten.
Uitreiking en presentatie
De C. Buddingh’-Prijs 2018 wordt op 31 mei uitgereikt tijdens ‘De Staat van de Poëzie’ op het Poetry International Festival. In aanloop op de uitreiking presenteren de dichters hun genomineerde debuten op donderdag 17 mei om 17:00 uur in de gezellige tuin van Boekhandel v/h Van Gennep, aan de Oude Binnenweg in Rotterdam.

De reeksen in Voor het ideaal, lees de schaal lopen thematisch en stilistisch sterk uiteen, maar steeds is de taal nauwkeurig en het geheel is op prettige wijze raadselachtig. Reeksen als ‘De kiezelstenen’ (met onder andere een adembenemend gedicht over het begraven van een duif), ‘Parachutisten’, ‘Zeilen’, ‘De bergen zijn grijs, de zee is groen’ en ‘Coniferen’ kan ik blijven herlezen. Zorgvuldig geformuleerd, zonder vet aan de randen. […]
Al lezend vergat ik de techniek en de eventuele teksten die wel of niet achter deze bundel schuilgaan. De authenticiteit zit in de kijkrichting, in de respectvolle selectie en schikking van het materiaal. Daar zit het gevoel, om het klef te zeggen. Gelukkig is poëzie geen veredeld potje quizzen – het gaat om het plezier van de tekst. Dat plezier is hier volop te vinden.
